Pipeline FFS is a software tool for determining the remaining strength of corroded pipes.

The Pipeline FFS Software allows for Level 1 or Level 2 assessments. The Level 2 assessment uses Effective Area or the remaining strength (rstreng) of the pipe. This produces a much more accurate estimate of the metal loss and, consequently, a more accurate determination of the remaining strength.

Determining the remaining strength of damaged pipes is a critical part of the asset integrity management program for pipeline operating companies. For corroded pipes, the remaining strength is a function of the metal loss for individual defects and the interaction between these defects. A variety of techniques have been developed to enable the calculation of remaining strength based on measurements made of either the metal loss or the remaining metal. The techniques fall into three categories which are referred to as Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3.

The effective area or RSTRENG method, the Level 2 method, determines the corrosion profile using a more sophisticated approach: data is collected over the entire longitudinal length (axial) and circumferential width of the area of corrosion. This can be done with a pit gage but is more typically done using NDT equipment (for example, a 3D structured light surface measurement tool, laser scanner, or UT). The corrosion profile, also referred to as the river bottom profile or critical profile, is then extracted from the data.

Figure 1: Site and Pipe Information

The site and pipe information is a critical part of overall data integrity. Entering information about the site ensures that the fitness for service results are appropriately linked to the location where data is taken. Entering pipe information assures the calculations take into consideration the pipe characteristics. All critical data is passed to the database and linked to the fitness for service result assuring the anomaly data is Traceable, Verifiable and Complete to PHMSA requirements.

There are four options to enter data into Pipeline FFS Software: Insert, Delete, Add, and Paste. Add allows the user to add a data point to the end of corrosion profile. Insert allows the user to insert data anywhere within the corrosion profile. Delete allows the user to delete one or more selected rows. Paste allows the user to paste one or more rows from the clipboard. Data can be copied to the clipboard from an Excel, csv, or other file. Below is an example format.

After calculating the fitness for service results, the results can be saved to the data base and a formal Excel based report can be easily generated at the work site.
